Shanghai Port Football Club (previously named Shanghai East Asia Football Club) was founded in 2005. It was jointly funded and established by Shanghai East Asia (Group) Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Genbao Football Club Academy Co., Ltd. Xu Genbao, who is a local coach in Shanghai, China, was the chairman of the company and the club. Under the leadership of Xu Genbao, the team began to participate in the professional league in 2006, all the way through Chinese Football Association Division Two League to Chinese Football Association China League, and has completed the Super League in 2012.


In 2013, Shanghai SIPG become the title sponsor for the club.  


On the 18 Nov, 2014, SIPG completed the overall acquisition of Shanghai East Asia Football Club with original intention of returning to the society and contributing to the development of recreational sports. Since the season of 2015 until today, Shanghai Port FC has made outstanding achievements in Chinese Super League and they have won the second place in the season of 2015 and 2017 and third place in the season of 2016, as always ranked at top.    

 

In the season of 2018, with the great efforts from all coaches, players and staffs, the team has won the Chinese Super League championship, it was the first Chinese Super League championship trophy in the club history, as well the best achievement in history since the establishment of the team. After 23 years, for the city of Shanghai, the team once again received the highest honor in China professional football top league.


On the 23 Feb 2019, the team won the first Super Cup championship in the team history.


In the Asian zone, the team that participated in the AFC Champions League for the first time in 2016, has won the first place in group stage and finally entered the quarterfinals.  In 2017, the team went a step further and broke into the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League, also created the best results of Shanghai Football in AFC Champions League.


In the recent years, many players in the team has been chosen to be participate in Chinese national team. Such as Yan Junling, Wang Shenchao, Li Ang, Yu Hai, Lyu Wenjun, Cai Huikang and He Guan. Especially Yan Junling has been selected to the national team three times who is also the goalkeeper of the year.

 

In February 2021, in accordance with the document requirements from  Chinese Football Association "Notice on the Implementation of Non-Corporate Amendment of Club Names in Professional Leagues at All Levels", "Shanghai SIPG Football Club" was officially renamed as "Shanghai Port Football Club".
